Zach and Doug (mostly Doug) take a look at rule errors they’ve made, sometimes simple, sometimes not, that have drastically changed the way games have been played. While not always making games unplayable, the guys do worry they might ruin a gaming experience for someone who has never played the game before. Doug also learns that K2 and Kilimanjaro are not the same place! Mountains!

We examine tools including soundtracks and helper apps as well as special dice, component substitutions, and background music as well as fan-created supplements. <![CDATA[Adjacent Hex #18 - The Impact of Reviewers]]>Wed, 28 Jun 2017 00:34:36 GMThttp://ghostshipradio.com/4/post/2017/06/adjacent-hex-episode-181.html
After another busy spring month of moving, conventions, school work and everything in between, Zach and Doug find themselves facing a distinct lack of games played. Instead, we find ourselves talking about how strongly reviewers impact our likelihood to purchase or play a game and how the availability of reviews has changed the way the industry markets games. We also examine the best practices for approaching reviews and how to discern which reviewers will be the most helpful to the consumer.

Being the perenial “year in review” time of the year, we decided that putting a top-ten list together seemed like too much effort. So we decided to answer some key questions instead. After a brief hiatus, the boys are back! The playspace has been dominated by living card games recently. Zach looks at the economics of getting into a card game product both from the consumer and developer side. Strategy and similarities are examined as well as carryover from the world of trading cards.

The guys examine the growing impact of Kickstarter as both a launch platform and a preorder service. What makes a company trustworthy and reliable as well as what elements make a Kickstarter page or campaign stand out and draw a viewer into a campaign. Zach and Doug go deep on what makes a game thematically strong and how it impacts our decisions whether to play games or leave them at the store. The guys examine games that have strong themes and games that are weaker in theme and still well loved as well as games that are so mechanically strong that any theme can be applied to the game and gameplay remains memorable.

With Geek & Sundry's annual "International Tabletop Day" looming, the guys are joined by special guest, Eric Fortier, to talk about the distribution of promotional materials and what that means to a completionist collector. Zach talks about how he didn't get to play a single game at the last ITD because he was chasing promos all over the northeast and Doug explores the differences between casual and competetive collectors. We also talk about some of the promotional items we've had to scramble to get our hands on over the years, some of the hoops we've had to jump through, and offer some suggestions as to how the distribution of promos can be improved to become less of a burden on both gamers and game companies.
